Treatment for Depression
A few years ago I attempted to help a close friend find a counsellor/therapist. I scoured my psychology textbooks and then opened the yellow pages (a UK business directory) in order to attempt to find someone that would be suitable. I was bombarded with information concerning countless approaches to counselling, and left completely confused as to what on earth these approaches amounted to. There were ‘psychoanalytic’ councellors, ‘psychotherapists’ ‘psychodynamic’, ‘person-centred’, ‘cognitive-behavioural’, ‘hypnotherapists’, ‘transaction analysis’, ‘humanistic’, ‘cognitive analysis’ therapists; the list was endless. I had no idea what were the merits or pit-falls associated with each approach to treatment. I was left very confused.
I appreciate that if you are attempting to look for treatment for a psychological condition, or for general emotional life improvement, then the process of deciding which type of therapy to choose can be extremely confusing. With this in mind, I have provided the following pages in order to give an overview of some of the major approaches to psychological treatment. I do not promise to answer all your questions; I simply aim to provide a starting point for those who wish to make an at least somewhat informed decision regarding the treatment they wish to take.
